Eating disorders are attempts to protect from painful
feelings, even if this is not consciously realized. Sometimes, withdrawal
from food seems to logically equate to withdrawing from painful feelings.
Overeating attempts to push feelings away. Or, a physical eating disorder
may actually be present, which we would view as the result of harboring
suppressed feelings.
In all cases, beginning to work at a feeling level
is the key to bringing the psychic self into balance; the physical will
follow.
